The Arkansas born singer, songwriter and guitarist, who epitomised the darker side of American country music, was signed to Sam Phillips’ Sun label in 1954, alongside Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley. Known as ‘The Man In Black’ he began a long series of hit singles which established him as one of the world’s top selling artists.
