Das fünfte Album John Lennons, Walls and Bridges, entstand während seines berühmten »Lost Weekend« – einer Zeit der Trennung von Yoko Ono, während der er sich in Los Angeles vorrangig dem Alkohol zuwandte. Nach ersten Aufnahmen und einem Streit mit Produzent Phil Spector zog er zurück New York und richtete seine Energien auf das Album. Mit »Whatever Gets You Thru’ The Night« schrieb Lennon den ersten Nummer-1-Hit seiner Solo-Karriere. »Going Down on Love«, »Steel and Glass« und »No. 9 Dream« sind Höhepunkte des Albums.
Walls and Bridges wurde am 26. September 1974 in den USA veröffentlicht und war Johns zweite LP, die die Billboard-Charts anführte. Der Titel bezieht sich auf die Mauern, die ihn und andere ihm nahestehende Menschen umgeben, und auf die Brücken, die er abgebrannt und wieder aufgebaut hat.
Das Album enthält "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night", einen mit Elton John aufgenommenen Song, der auch Lennons erstes Solo-Single wurde, das die Billboard Hot 100 anführte. Der Song trug natürlich dazu bei, dass "Walls and Bridges" die Spitzenposition erreichte.
