Konfrontiert mif diesem Moment der unglaublichen Möglichkeiten, fühlten R&B-Sänger Legend und die Hip-Hop-Band The Roots das Bedürfnis, in Aktion zu treten. ,,Unsere ursprüngliche ldee war es, einen coolen, angesagten Soundtrack zu dieser Stimmung zu machen, zu dieser Art von Ruhelosigkeif und Optimismus", sagt Legend. Die geplante Single wurde zu einer EP, die wiederum in ein ganzes Album-Projekt überging, das den Titel Wake UP! trägt.
Die elf Songs auf dem Album - durchzogen von Gospel-, Rock- und Reggae-Einflüssen ohne dabei die Hip-Hop-Wurzeln zu verlieren - vereinen Bekanntes (,,Wholly Holy" von Morvin Gaye, ,,Little Ghetto Boy" von Donny Hathaway) mit Obskurem (,,Hard Times" von Baby Huey and the Babysitters, ,,Hang on in There" von Mike James Kirkland). Wake Up! mischt Legends ausdrucksstarke und nachdenkliche gesangliche lnterpretationen mif dem geschmeidigen Funk der Roots.
