Burnin' aus dem Jahr 1962 wurde in einer einzigen Session mit Schlagzeug, Bass, zweiter Gitarre, Klavier, Tenorsaxophon und Baritonsaxophon aufgenommen und stellt eine Abkehr von früheren Hooker-Alben dar, auf denen er oft nur mit einer Gitarre und einem Stück Sperrholz spielte, auf das er mit dem Fuß stampfte.
Seine Begleitband für diese Vee-Jay-Veröffentlichung besteht aus Mitgliedern der Funk Brothers, die vor allem als Hausband von Motown Records bekannt sind. Sie leisten bewundernswerte Arbeit, wenn es darum geht, Hooker, einem der eigenwilligsten Musiker der Branche, zu folgen, wohin auch immer er führt. Das Album beginnt mit der Single »Boom Boom«, die im Laufe der Jahre zu einem Blues-Standard geworden ist. Der Musikkritiker Charles Shaar Murray nannte ihn »den größten Popsong, den [Hooker] je geschrieben hat«. Die Strophen des Songs, der so ziemlich die straffste musikalische Struktur aller Hooker-Kompositionen aufweist, halten sich gewissenhaft an das zwölftaktige Format, auf dem er sonst eher herumtobt. Und die Qualität lässt auch nach dem starken Opener nicht nach. Stattdessen bietet das Album ein zusammenhängendes und fesselndes Hörerlebnis, das einen von Anfang bis Ende gefangen hält. "Burnin'" is easily one of best records next to "It Serves You Right To Suffer" and "I'm John Lee Hooker" that the blues master has recorded with a backing band without sacrificing his characteristic, monotonous beat. Along with an absolutely awe-inspiring version of the LEROY CARR track "Blues Before Sunrise" stands the indestructible "Boom, Boom" - here buffed up by Joe Hunter's piano - which became the unofficial anthem of British Invasion bands like ANIMALS&THEM. The eleven remastered analogue tracks of the original are here accompanied by five ultra rare bonus tracks. 180gr vinyl in a heavy duty cover with an updated, authentic version of the original artwork.
