The guitar virtuoso, John Fahey, has often been described as the greatest guitarist in the world, having led the way in 12-string playing since the late 1950s. Yet he is unclassifiable-.-every musical ghetto, from jazz, blues and folk to country, classical and experimental rock, claim to be the roots of his influence. Fahey most certainly fuses all these styles in his unique concoction, and has seduced hoards of music lovers and musicians to his camp - achieving an unparalleled cult status. By the time he'd reach and his teens, Fahey played country-style guitar in the footsteps of Hank Williams and Eddy Arnold. In the ensuing years he incorporated many other styles in his playing, taking his goals far beyond the horizons of most musicians. He set up the Takoma label with Ed Denson in the late 50s. The Transfiguration Of Blind Joe Death, reissued this month, was first released on Takoma in the early 60s. A decade later, this album had become an impenetrable cult classic, and is much in-demand even today. It's considered by many fans, including Leo Kottke to be his best-ever recording. Fahey's influence on other musicians is far greater than his record sales. He refuses to be tainted by sophisticated marketing strategies, or to adopt a mass-appeal commercial sound. Critics have recognised this in his later release, "City Of Refuge", But it is this single-minded approach, together with his elusiveness, which has earned him so much respect: he is a natural-born leader. You have to know where he's coming from to understand Fahey's position today and where better to look than at the beginning. This is where it all started: The Transfiguration Of Blind Joe Death.
