Jeff Becks Mentor und Produzent Mickie Most hatte den richtigen Riecher. Nach der Trennung von den Yardbirds und drei erfolgreichen Pop-Singles setzte er auf eine handfeste Band für den Gitarrenkünstler. Diese entstand mit Sänger Rod Stewart, Bassist Ron Wood und Schlagzeuger Micky Waller.
Das Debütalbum Truth aus dem Jahr 1968 ist fest im Bluesrock verwurzelt und enthält Originale von Willi Dixon, Muddy Waters und Howlin' Wolf. Titel von B. B. King und Buddy Guy veränderten Beck und Stewart hingegen so stark, dass sie als eigene Kompositionen durchgehen. Gleichzeitig war das Album wegweisend für den Heavy Metal und gilt als ebenso einflussreich wie die ersten Werke der Beatles, Stones oder The Who.
