Unter all den berühmten Musikstücken Henry Mancinis dürfte »The Pink Panther Theme« vermutlich den Spitzenplatz einnehmen, was Bekanntheit und Wiedererkennungswert betrifft. Das aufregende, jazzige Titelstück aus Blake Edwards‘ Komödie um den tolpatschigen Inspektor Clouseau und den englischen Meisterdieb Sir Charles Lytton ist nicht nur ein unvergesslicher Klassiker der Filmmusikgeschichte. Es wurde zudem als Eingangsmelodie für die aus dem Vorspann des Films hervorgegangene Zeichentrickserie genutzt, die über Jahre hinweg im Fernsehen ausgestrahlt wurde, und machte Generationen von Kindern mit Mancinis Musik bekannt.
Den Soundtrack allerdings lediglich auf das »Pink Panther Theme« zu reduzieren, wäre ein schwerer Fehler, finden sich dort doch elf weitere wunderbare Lieder aus der Feder Mancinis, wie das beschwingte »It Had Better Be Tonight«, »Something for Sellers« oder das feine »Royal Blue«. Henry Mancini wurde für »The Pink Panther« völlig zu Recht mit drei Grammys ausgezeichnet und für den Oscar nominiert. Über 50 Jahre nach ihrem Erscheinen hat die Filmmusik zum rosaroten Panther nichts von ihrer Klasse eingebüßt und ist nun auch dank Analogue Productions in einer audiophilen Ausgabe auf SACD zu haben. Das Remastering von den Originalbändern übernahm Ryan Smith von Sterling Sound.
