When the Rolling Stones replaced Mick Taylor in 1975 one of the first guitarists they auditioned and actually recorded with was the legendary Harvey Mandel, known for his work with Canned Heat, his mastery of Chicago Blues, and in particular the hauntingly magnificent, psychedelic-tinged 1968 instrumental solo album Cristo Redentor. Intrepid and adventurous at the time, Mandel, described in the Rolling Stone Record Guide as “a phenomenal blues-rock guitarist with jazz technique and chops”, coaxed superior performances out of the other players and imbued the whole project with a sense of true musical purpose.
Apart from albums under his own name and two with John Mayall, Mandel was a member of Canned Heat, Barry Goldberg’s band and the Pure Food & Drug Act, and played a session for Love. Songs from all those sojourns comprise the 8 bonus tracks, with superb quality audio. (ravenrecords. com. au)
