2004 hatten sich Giant Sand so verändert, dass nichts mehr wie vorher war. Die Bandmitglieder, die in der Vergangenheit so kreativ und talentiert waren, waren nun wörtlich quer auf der ganzen Weltkarte verteilt: „It’s All Over The Map“.
Bassist Joey Burns und Schlagzeuger Jon Convertino hatten sich mit Calexico auf neue Wanderungen begeben; an ihre Stelle trat nun eine Rhythmussektion aus Skandinavien, die Howe Gelb und Giant Sand dabei helfen sollte, das erste wirklich neue Material seit „Chore Of Enchantment“ von 2000 aufzunehmen.
„It’s All Over The Map“ wurde damit zu einer Platte, die sich an die wilderen und aggressiven Zeit der alten Giant Sand erinnerte und sich auf die Suche nach Bekanntem aus alten Zeite machen – das Mittel dazu ist Verzerrung.
