Bill Miller (Piano) wurde angewiesen, auf spontane Weise zu arbeiten. Bei den Sessions ging es nur um Emotionen, da Sinatra einen klanglich emotionalen Liebesbrief an Ava Gardner verfassen wollte. Sein Ziel war es, die wachsende emotionale Distanz zu verringern, die zwischen dem Ehepaar entstanden war.
In The Wee Small Hours, das erste Sinatra-Album, das in den USA in die Charts einstieg, erreichte am Ende sogar Platz 2 und blieb 33 Wochen in den Charts.
