Wäre der Begriff nicht negativ besetzt, man könnte das fünfte Album der Decemberists ein Konzeptalbum nennen. Mit "The Hazards Of Love" erzählt die Band aus Portland die Geschichte von Margaret und William und den vielen dramatischen Irrungen und Wirrungen zwischen beiden. Nebenbei beweist die Band in den 17 Songs, dass eine merkwürdige Verbindung zwischen britischem Folk und klassischem Metal besteht: Beide verbindet ein Sinn für Erzählungen, für Atmosphären und gelegentlich auch ein hintergründiger Humor. So entstand unter Tucker Martines Produzentenägide ein geradezu bombastisches Werk, das eine Brücke zwischen den Stilen baut und eine Geschichte von nahezu biblischen Ausmaßen erzählt. Dabei wurde das Quintett um Colin Meloy von namhaften Kollegen wie etwa Becky Stark (Lavender Diamond), Shara Worden (My Brightest Diamond) und Jim James (My Morning Jacket) unterstützt.
