Bei der Veröffentlichung seines ersten Soloalbums, war David Gilmour nicht nur als großartiger Gitarrist von Pink Floyd, sondern auch bereits als charismatischer Sänger - wie er unter anderem bei dem Welthit »Wish You Where Here« unter Beweis stellen konnte - bekannt.
Das selbstbetitelte Debüt, aufgenommen mit Journeyman Bassist Rick Wills und Sutherland Brothers Drummer Willie Wilson - später auch im Pink Floyd Live Line Up zur »The Wall«-Tour zu finden - fiel im Vergleich zu den zuvor erschienenen Pink Floyd Platten nicht ganz so bombastisch aus, begeisterte aber gerade durch seine kürzeren und in sich geschlosseneren Titel. Insgesamt ist Gilmours Solodebüt ein wunderbares Stück Musik, welches keinem Pink Floyd Fan in der Sammlung fehlen sollte.
