Das dritte Album der Beatles in weniger als achtzehn Monaten wurde am 10. Juli 1964 veröffentlicht und fiel zeitlich mit dem Kinostart ihres ersten Films zusammen.
Von den 13 Titeln des Albums waren sieben auf dem Soundtrack des Films zu hören. Eine Single war bereits vor dem Album veröffentlicht worden, nämlich »Can't Buy Me Love«/»You Can't Do That«, die am 20. März erschienen war. Bemerkenswert war auch, dass zum ersten Mal auf einem Beatles-Album alle Titel von John und Paul komponiert worden waren.
Seit der Veröffentlichung von With The Beatles im November des Vorjahres hatte sich ihr Erfolg im Vereinigten Königreich auf die ganze Welt ausgebreitet. Ihre erste US-Single über Capitol Records - »I Want To Hold Your Hand«/»I Saw Her Standing There« - hatte sieben Wochen lang die US-Charts angeführt, was dazu führte, dass ihr früherer US-Vertrieb »She Loves You« und »Love Me Do« neu auflegte, die beide ebenfalls Platz 1 erreichten. Die Popularität der Gruppe war so groß, dass sie in der ersten Aprilwoche 1964 alle fünf ersten Plätze der Billboard-Charts und weitere sieben Titel der Hot Hundred Charts belegten.

ALL MUSIC GUIDE ***** "Maybe it was all the success of the previous year, but on their third (UK) album, the Beatles sound positively triumphant, roaring through exciting songs like the title tune, "Can't Buy me Love", and "Any Time at All". On their first album to be entirely self-written, it's the material (produced under incredible pressure) that continues to impress. "I Should Have Known Better", "If I Fell", "And I Love Her" - these are songs a generation can sing word-for-word decades later. At the same time, one can hear around the edges the beginnings of Lennon's darker side and individual voice, as more than once he refers to something he can't stand. "I'll Cry Instead" is almost bitter. 'A Hard Days Night's' freshness has not dated an hour."-
