Das Konzeptalbum über den schrecklichen Albtraum eines kleinen Jungen namens Steven war das Produkt der lebenslangen Faszination des Sängers für Gruselfilme: "Ich liebte Horrorfilme. Das tue ich immer noch", verriet er. "Und ich liebe auch Theater und Musicals. Und ich hatte immer die grandiose Idee, dass wir das Basisalbum nehmen und daraus eine Bühnenshow machen könnten, was wir schließlich auch getan haben. Ich sah es als eine Art Kreuzung zwischen einem bösen Märchen und etwas wie West Side Story. Wenn man sich etwas wie Gutter Cat Vs. The Jets von School's Out anhört, kann man das sowieso hören. Die Arbeit mit jemandem wie Bob Ezrin hat die ganze Sache wirklich vorangetrieben. Er hält sich nicht wirklich zurück und ist für alles offen, also haben wir einfach losgelegt. Unser Ziel war es, das Album fast wie einen Soundtrack für einen Film oder ein Theaterstück klingen zu lassen. Und ich denke, das haben wir mit "Welcome" erreicht.
Coopers Vision für Welcome to My Nightmare ging weit über ein reines Album hinaus. Es war die Quelle einer massiven und kreativ ehrgeizigen Bühnenshow mit Videosegmenten und einer Reihe von Bühnenfiguren, darunter tanzende Spinnen und ein drei Meter großer Zyklop. Die aufwendige Produktion kostete mehr als eine halbe Million Dollar und inspirierte sogar zu einem TV-Special auf dem ABC Network, Alice Cooper: The Nightmare. Die Show, die ursprünglich am 25. April 1975 ausgestrahlt wurde, gewann 1976 einen Emmy für "Outstanding Achievement in Video Tape Editing for a Special": Der Erzähler von "Welcome to My Nightmare", Vincent Price.
"Das war nicht geplant. Aber mit der Zeit begannen wir uns zu fragen, ob wir nicht etwas brauchen könnten, um einen zusätzlichen Effekt zu erzielen. Welcome to My Nightmare wurde am 11. März 1975 veröffentlicht und verwirrte damals viele Kritiker, was vor allem an dem sehr unterschiedlichen Sound des Albums lag, der mehr in Richtung Soundtrack-Dramatik als in Richtung Heavy-Metal-Donner tendierte. Die Fans jedoch waren begeistert und schickten die LP bis auf Platz 5 der Billboard 200 in der Woche vom 21. Juni 1975. Das #1 Album in Amerika in dieser Woche: Elton Johns "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy".
"Ich denke, wir haben mit diesem Album alles richtig gemacht", sagte Cooper. "Es hatte alle Elemente, die ich auf der Platte haben wollte. Und für ein erstes Soloalbum ist es kein schlechter Start!"

A precursor to the video revolution, Welcome To My Nightmare was an extravaganza on many historic levels. As a major television broadcast seen by millions, the album soared to the top of pop and rock charts, thanks to the clever paring of the songs, acting and general persona of the legend Alice Cooper.
Teaming up again with his long time producer Bob Ezrin, the duo assembled some of the greatest music to go along with the David Winter produced film, and in doing so, created some of his best known songs like the huge hit single Only Women Bleed. This top 5 single carried Welcome To My Nightmare into multiple platinum territory and forever etched the word superstar to the name of Alice Cooper.
Special guest star legend Vincent Price pays a visit as The Curator and narrator on Devil's Food. Plus stellar guitarists like Dick Wagner (Lou Reed / Peter Gabriel) and Steve Hunter (Lou Reed / David Lee Roth), and Tony Levin (King Crimson / Peter Gabriel) on bass, help make this a very hip and exciting listening experience.
