Das Album "I Robot" basiert konzeptionell auf den Science-Fiction-Roboter-Geschichten des Autors Isaac Asimov und erforscht philosophische Themen in Bezug auf künstliche Intelligenz.
Wie bei anderen Alan Parsons Project-Alben wurden verschiedene Leadsänger eingesetzt, darunter Steve Harley, Allan Clarke, Lenny Zakatek, Peter Straker, Jack Harris und Jaki Whitren. Hinzu kamen eine Reihe von Studiomusikern wie der Gitarrist Ian Bairnson und der Schlagzeuger Stuart Tosh mit Arrangements von Andrew Powell. Das Album war ein weltweiter Hit mit über zwei Millionen verkauften Exemplaren und erreichte in zahlreichen Ländern Platin- und Goldstatus, darunter in den USA, Deutschland, Australien und Kanada.
