Das Debüt-Studioalbum des Alan Parsons Project wurde ursprünglich im Juni 1976 veröffentlicht. Die lyrischen und musikalischen Themen des Albums sind Nacherzählungen von Horrorgeschichten und Gedichten von Edgar Allan Poe.
Zu den Musikern auf dem Album gehören die Sänger Arthur Brown von The Crazy World of Arthur Brown bei "The Tell Tale Heart", John Miles bei "The Cask of Amontillado" und "(The System of) Dr. Tarr and Professor Fether" sowie Terry Sylvester von The Hollies bei "To One in Paradise". Die komplette Besetzung der Bands Ambrosia und Pilot spielt auf dem Album mit, zusammen mit dem Keyboarder Francis Monkman von Curved Air and Sky.
Das Album war ein weltweiter Erfolg, verkaufte fast eine Million Exemplare und erreichte Platinstatus in einer Reihe von Ländern, darunter Deutschland und Kanada.
