Die britische Prog Rock Band Alan Parsons Project war zwischen 1975 und 1990 aktiv. Der Kern aus Eric Wollfson und Alan Parsons zog immer wieder verschiedene Sessionmusiker heran.
Die beiden trafen sich ursprünglich im Sommer 1974 in der Kantine der Abbey Road Studios. Parsons hatte bereits als Assistent an „Abbey Road“ und „Let It Be“ der Beatles mitgewirkt und hatte gerade als Toningenieur „The Dark Side Of The Moon“ von Pink Floyd betreut. Woolfson, ein Songwriter und Komponist, arbeitete als Session Pianist.
„I Robot“ ist ihr zweites Album und wurde 1977 aufgenommen. Ursprünglich sollte es auf den „I, Robot“-Geschichten des Sci-Fi Autors Isaac Asimov basieren, der von der Idee sehr angetan war. Die Rechte zu den Geschichten lagen aber bereits bei einer Fernsehfirma, so dass der Albumtitel auf das Komma verzichtete und die Texte allgemein von Robotern handelten.
