Gunther (Thomas Gottschalk) aus der ehemaligen DDR hat jahrelang an seiner Erfindung gearbeitet: einem Trabbi, der mit Rüben als Sprit über 250 km / h fährt. Nach Öffnung der Grenze macht er sich auf nach Hollywood, um seinen Supertrabbi auf dem internationalen Autosalon für gutes Geld zu verkaufen. Doch kaum ist er dort, wird der Trabbi schon geklaut. Glücklicherweise findet er neue Freunde: Max (Billy Dee Williams), ein Ex-Krimineller und die wunderhübsche Ricky helfen ihm, irrwitzige Verfolgungsjagden und erwartete Begegnungen mit der Unterwelt zu überstehen.
