Der französische Ingenieur Pierre Marsac verliebt sich in die junge Japanerin Noriko, eine Waise, und verlängert ihretwegen seinen Arbeitsvertrag in Japan. Als seine ehemalige Geliebte Francoise als Reporterin nach Japan kommt, wendet er sich allerdings erneut ihr zu, und die Japanerin verzichtet auf ihn.
Bevor sich der Ingenieur entscheiden kann, verwüstet ein Taifun Nagasaki; Noriko wird daraufhin vermisst, und da die französische Geliebte nach Europa zurückkehrt, steht er allein in den Trümmern.
