Weil er einen Verkehrsunfall mit tödlichem Ausgang verschuldete, muss ein Familienvater 7 Jahre hinter Gitter. Die dort täglich herrschende Gewalt lässt den neuen Insassen bald ins Lager einer Gang wechseln, die ihm innerhalb der Gefängnismauern ihren Schutz garantiert. Doch kaum wieder auf freiem Fuß, fordern seine ehemaligen 'Beschützer' weitere Gefallen ein. So bekommt er den Auftrag, eine rivalisierende Gang in den Straßen Südkaliforniens unschädlich zu machen. Ein gnadenloser Kampf ums blanke Überleben beginnt, in dem auch seine eigene Familie zur Zielscheibe wird.
