Im Jahr 809 schickt Karl der Große, König der Franken, eine Delegation auf Friedensmission nach Bagdad. Dort verliebt sich Prinzessin Sheherazade, die Harun al-Raschid, dem Kalifen von Bagdad, versprochen ist, in den stattlichen fränkischen Ritter Renaud de Villecroix.
