Anna Wetherell zieht in den 1860er Jahren von Großbritannien nach Neuseeland, wo ein Goldrausch auf der südlichen Insel unzählige Edelmetallschürfer anlockt. In dem Ort Dunedin angekommen, trifft sie auf den charismatischen Emery Staines, der auf sie eine unerklärliche Anziehungskraft ausübt. Anna lernt auch die amerikanische Wahrsagerin Lydia Wells kennen, bei der sie übernachtet. Einige Zeit später finden sich Anna und Emery in der Goldschürferstadt Hokitika wieder, wo das Glück auf sie warten soll. Doch hier fangen die Probleme für die junge, aufstrebende Britin erst an.
