Im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger werden zudem ein hoher Kontrastumfang, eine höhere Bildwiederholrate und ein größerer Farbraum unterstützt. Normale Blu-ray-Player können die neuen Medien nicht wiedergeben. Ultra-HD-Blu-ray-fähige Geräte sind in der Regel abwärtskompatibel.
