Während eines Urlaubs am Lake Superior machen Paul und Timmy zusammen mit Lassie einen Bootsausflug. Als starker Sturm aufkommt, kentert das Boot, und Paul und Timmy können sich ans Ufer retten. Lassie jedoch bleibt außer Sicht und wird vom Forstbeamten Corey Stuart meilenweit vom Urlaubsort der Martins entfernt aus dem See gefischt und wiederbelebt. Da Stuart nicht herausfinden kann, wem sie gehört, behält er sie zunächst bei sich. Unterdessen suchen die Martins nach ihr.
