Jackson Pollock gehörte zu den berühmtesten amerikanischen abstrakten Expressionisten. Er erfand das Action Painting, bei dem mit einem Pinsel, Spachtel oder einem anderen Gerät die Farbe schnell und spontan auf die Leinwand gebracht wird. Das Ergebnis muss trotz des schnellen Vorgangs stets durchdacht und komponiert sein. Jackson Pollock hatte Malerei in Los Angeles und New York studiert, wurde aber vor allem von den Navajo-Indianern in New Mexiko beeinflusst. Seine frühe Phase war noch halb gegenständlich, doch bald wandte sich Pollock ganz der Abstraktion zu. Sein Spätwerk bestand vor allem aus Drip Paintings in übergroßen Formaten. Jackson Pollock litt an einer psychischen Krankheit, die er mit Alkohol zu bekämpfen versuchte. Er starb mit 44 Jahren bei einem Autounfall, als er betrunken war.
