Der Alkoholiker Warren Novak macht sich mit dem Auto auf den Weg nach Mexiko, um dort seinen angeblich unehelichen Sohn zu treffen. Kurz vor der Grenze verirrt sich Novak jedoch in die Kleinstadt Bedford Flats, was sich alsbald als ein fataler Fehler erweist. Schließlich befinden sich die Bewohner just zu diesem Zeitpunkt in den Vorbereitungen zu einem alljährlichen Fest, an welchem für die Dauer eines Tages alles erlaubt ist. So auch die Jagd auf alle jene Menschen, die das Pech haben, eben an jenem Tag die Stadtgrenze zu überschreiten. Novak und eine Handvoll anderer Unschuldiger werden somit zum Freiwild erklärt und eine gnadenloselagd durch die Wüste beginnt.
