Der intellektuelle Ferdinand Griffon, genannt „Pierrot“, ist von seinem bürgerlichen Leben gelangweilt. Als er seine frühere Geliebte Marianne wieder trifft, verlässt er für sie spontan seine Familie. Auf ihrer Reise nach Südfrankreich ziehen die Liebenden eine blutige Schneise der Verwüstung durchs Land, bis Ferdinand von Gangstern entführt und gefoltert wird. Er soll den Verbrechern verraten, wo Marianne sich versteckt hält.
Nach dem explosiven Kultroman „Obsession“ von Lionel White drehte Regielegende Jean-Luc Godard eine preisgekrönte Gangsterballade, die mit schauspielerischen Glanzleistungen und revolutionären Erzähltechniken Filmgeschichte schrieb.
