Die Super-Mario-Brüder rücken diesmal aus, um eine gestohlene Statue zurückzuholen. König Koopa (den Videospielfreunden auch als BOWSER bekannt) hatte sie einer Stadt gestohlen, die dadurch vor gefährlichen Krokodilen aus dem Urwald geschützt wurde. In einem Wild-West-Abenteuer entführt König Koopas alter Ego Billy the Koopa Prinzessin Toadstool. Unterdessen entdecken Mario und Luigi eine Mine mit Goldmünzen. Natürlich setzt Koopa alles daran, an das Gold zu kommen. Wenn es denn überhaupt echt ist.
