Ein schrecklicher Fund an der Seine. Eine junge Frau wird tot im Pariser Fluss entdeckt. Alles Blut wurde aus ihr herausgesaugt. Die Polizei ist alarmiert und macht sich auf die Suche nach einem wahnsinnigen Serienkiller. Der junge Journalist Pierre Lantin will dem gruseligen Mord auf eigene Faust nachgehen. Nacht für Nacht streicht er durch die Gassen rund um Notre Dame, um den Spuren des Mörders zu folgen. Sie führen ihn zu einer mysteriösen Herzogin, die ein unheimliches Geheimnis verbirgt.
Italiens erster großer Horrorfilm war ein Werk zweier Männer, die zu den Großmeistern des Genres werden sollten: Mario Bava und Riccardo Freda. Angelehnt an den deutschen Expressionismus inszenierten die beiden einen hochspannenden, fantastischen Gothic-Grusler, der das Genre in Italien prägen sollte.
