Anfang der 30er Jahre leidet Kansas unter einer schweren Dürre. Der Schwindler Bill Starbuck nutzt dies aus, indem er der Landbevölkerung vorgaukelt, für 100 Dollar Regen erzeugen zu können. Auf der Rinderfarm von H.C. Curry ist die Lage besonders schlecht, da seine Tochter Lizzie keinen Ehemann findet. Starbuck erscheint als die ideale Lösung, obwohl er zunächst nur seine Schwindelei durchzieht. Um Lizzie und die Familie zu retten, muss er jedoch mehr leisten, da auch die Brüder Noah und Jim zerstritten sind. Aber dann kommt noch hinzu, dass Lizzie sich plötzlich zwischen zwei Männern entscheiden muss ...
