Eigentlich kneift die Polizei im Pariser Rotlichtviertel beide Augen zu. Nur der übereifrige Streifenpolizist Nestor möchte im Viertel aufräumen - und wird prompt suspendiert. Niedergeschlagen trifft er in einer verruchten Bar auf das Straßenmädchen Irma la Douce, in das er sich unsterblich verliebt. Als er ihre Ehre verteidigt, ist es wie selbstverständlich, dass Nestor nun Irmas Zuhälter wird und sie beschützen muss. Das macht er einfach, in dem er, verkleidet als mysteriöser Lord X, zu Irmas Stammkunden wird.
Nach dem großen Erfolg von DAS APPARTEMENT brachte der große Billy Wilder die hinreißende Shirley MacLaine und den einmaligen Jack Lemmon noch einmal zusammen. Da Wilder sich Lemmon nicht als Sänger vorstellen konnte, verfilmte er das bekannte Musical komplett ohne Gesang. Dennoch verwendete André Previn die Melodien der Songs in seiner Musik und gewann dafür prompt den Oscar®. Shirley MacLaine gewann für ihre Darstellung der süßen Irma einen Golden Globe.
