Russland, 1762: Nach der geplanten Ermordung ihres eigenen Ehemannes wird Katharina die neue Zarin von Russland. Doch auch als mächtigste Frau Russlands kann sie niemandem vertrauen: Ihr Langzeitliebhaber fordert den öffentlichen Status eines Ehemannes, ihr ungeliebter Sohn Paul versucht seinen Thronanspruch geltend zu machen und selbst der ehemalige Kinds-Zar Ivan VI. führt eine Verschwörung gegen sie an.
Doch Katharina beherrscht das Spiel um Macht besser als jeder Mann. Als der attraktive Leutnant Grigory Potemkin am Hof von St. Petersburg auftaucht und ihr Vertrauter wird, beginnen die beiden eine leidenschaftliche Affäre und Katharina merkt schnell, dass sie mit ihm auch einen wichtigen Partner für die politische und militärische Zukunft Russlands gefunden hat.
