Um die teure Operation für seine Ehefrau zu bezahlen will ein Vater aus der Arbeiterklasse aus Los Angeles einem kriminellen Freund bei einem Bankraub helfen, bei dem bis zu 32 Millionen US-Dollar herausspringen können. Der Plan läuft jedoch schief, als zunächst ein Polizeibeamter den Raubzug unterbricht und schließlich vom Duo niedergeschossen wird.
Eingekesselt versucht sich das Duo den heranfahrenden SWAT-Teams zu erwehren. Als Fluchtfahrzeug wählen sie im Eifer des Gefechts ausgerechnet den Krankenwagen, der heranfährt um dem Polizisten das Leben zu retten. Die Sanitäterin als auch der angeschossene Polizist werden als Geiseln genommen, während das Duo eine wilde Flucht mit dem Krankenwagen hinlegt.
