Fanny Price (Frances O?Connor), die als Zehnjährige zu den wohlhabenden Verwandten nach Mansfield Park kommt, wächst in dem prachtvollen Herrenhaus wie das sprichwörtliche arme Stiefkind auf. Ihr Cousin Edmond (Jonny Lee Miller) ist der einzige, der ihr den Aufenthalt erträglich macht. Mit ihm teilt sie die Leidenschaft für Literatur und Dichtung, und Edmond wiederum ist von Fanny und ihrem freiem Denken und Fühlen völlig fasziniert. Die beiden wären das ideale Paar, doch die Ankunft der Geschwister Mary (Embeth Davidtz) und Henry Crawford (Alessandro Nivola) bringt das emotionale Leben auf Mansfield Park ziemlich durcheinander. Edmond verliebt sich in Mary, und der charmante Henry macht Fanny überraschend einen Heiratsantrag. Aber Fanny durchschaut den Filou mit seinem unsteten Charakter und lehnt ab, Henrys Frau zu werden. Sie muss Mansfield Park verlassen, und ihre Chancen, Edmond wiederzusehen, sind gleich null.
