Der große Erfolg der Laurel&Hardy-Filme Ende der 1920er Jahre ließ im Hal-Roach-Studio schon bald die Idee aufkommen, ein Pendant mit zwei weiblichen Darstellern zu finden. Bereits zur Stummfilmzeit versuchte man es mit Anita Garvin & Marion Byron, die sich aber nach nur drei Filmen wieder trennten - obwohl ihre Filme zu Meisterwerke der Filmkomödie waren. Zu Beginn der Tonfilmzeit wurde dann um die unter Vertrag stehende blonde Schönheit Thelma Todd eine eigene Serie aufgebaut, in der sie zunächst mit ZaSu Pitts, später mit Patsy Kelly Kurzfilmkomödien drehte, die in Deutschland weitgehend unbekannt geblieben sind. Auch wenn die Qualität ihrer Filme etwas schwankender war als die der Laurel&Hardy-Serie, so stehen die besten Komödien den Vorbildern in nichts nach.-
