Der innovative amerikanische Ingenieur Laurens Hammond startete 1935 die professionelle Produktion seiner neuesten Erfindung, einer kostengünstigen elektro-akustischen Alternative zur vorwiegend in Kirchen installierten Pfeifenorgel, der nach ihm benannten Hammondorgel.

Zu den ersten Kunden zählten neben Kirchengemeinden George Gershwin und Count Basie. Die Jazz Pianisten Basie, Fats Waller, Wild Bill Davis (Mitglied der populären Tympani Five von Louis Jordan) und Milt Buckner waren die Gründungsväter eines weltweiten Siegeszuges in allen Sparten der populären Musik, von Jazz bis Progressive Rock, mit einer Blütezeit in den 60er und 70er Jahren des 20. Jahrhunderts.
