»Toto Bona Lokua« war das Debüt von Richard Bona aus Kamerun, dem Kongolesen Lokua Kanza und Gérald Toto von den Antillen. Es wurde ursprünglich 2004 veröffentlicht, verbreitete sich über Mund-zu-Mund- Propaganda und kam vor allem in Frankreich sehr gut an – und das mit nur wenig Promotion und ohne gemeinsame Tour. Die Nachpressung erscheint als Vorbote zum zweiten Album »Bondeko« und ist somit erstmals als Vinyl erhältlich.
»Toto Bona Lokua« enthält ein Dutzend Songs, die überwiegend a cappella vorgetragen werden, und nur gelegentlich und ganz sparsam mit Piano, Percussion, Gitarre oder Bass instrumentiert werden. Das Album entstand mehr oder weniger ungeplant aus Sessions »just ›to see‹ what we can do together; what we have to say to each other, to exchange, to share«, wie das Trio selbst bemerkt.
So unterschiedlich die kulturellen Backgrounds der drei Musiker sind, so harmonisch gelingt es ihnen, allein mit der Kraft ihrer Stimmen afrikanische und karibische Elemente spielerisch leicht zu verbinden.
