Als Thelonious Monk mit seinem Quartett am 7. August 1958 im New Yorker Five Spot Café auftrat, lieferte er seiner Plattenfirma Riverside genügend Material für zwei grandiose Alben: “Thelonious In Action” und “Misterioso”. Beim Repertoire beider Platten konnte Monk aus dem reichen Fundus seiner Eigekompositionen schöpfen. Für “Misterioso” spielte er neben eigenen Klassikern wie “Nutty”, “In Walked Bud” und dem Titelstück aber auch eine Solo-Version des alten Louis-Prima-Hits “Just A Gigolo” ein. Bedauerlich ist lediglich, dass Monk dieses fantastisch aufspielende Quartett mit Tenorsaxophonist Johnny Griffin, Bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malik und Schlagzeuger Roy Haynes nicht länger zusammen hielt. Beim Bonus-Track dieser neuen CD-Edition, einem zwölfminütigen Medley aus “Bye-Ya” und “Epistrophy”, sprang der ebenfalls prächtig aufgelegte Art Blakey für Roy Haynes ein.
