Red Garland came to Prestige, and the wider jazz audience, as a key member of the Miles Davis Quintet. While at Prestige, however, he also developed two other avenues of expression: his own trio dates; and a series of quintet albums featuring John Coltrane's tenor sax and Donald Byrd's trumpet in the front line, with George Joyner (later known as Jamil Nasser) on bass, and Arthur Taylor on drums.
This quintet outing presents a mix of jazz standards--Ellington's "Solitude" and (Charlie) Shavers's "Undecided"--with Vernon Duke's "What Is There to Say"; "Soft Winds" from the Benny Goodman sextet library; and John Lewis's "Two Bass Hit" from the Dizzy Gillespie book. Although this combination gigged together only occasionally, the cohesiveness would lead one to think that it was a regular working group.
With John Coltrane, Donald Byrd, George Joyner, Arthur Taylor.
