Die von Roland Kirk produzierte Musik enthält Einflüsse aus der gesamten Geschichte der afroamerikanischen Musik, von Louis Armstrong bis John Coltrane. Am Ende seiner Laufbahn nahm er Songs von Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson und Bill Withers auf.
Er hatte gewaltigen Einfluss auf den Jazz, aber auch auf die Rock-Musik. Zu seinen Bewunderern zählten Jimi Hendrix, der gerne mit ihm zusammen gearbeitet hätte, und Frank Zappa.
Hier werden die besten frühen Werke von Roland Kirk präsentiert, darunter das komplette Album »We Free Kings« aus dem Jahr 1961, ein wahrer Jazz-Klassiker.
