Als Altsaxophonist des Dave Brubeck Quartetts war Paul Desmond eine zentrale Figur im kommerziell erfolgreichsten Jazz-Ensemble der damaligen Zeit. Als einziger Bläser der Gruppe wurde er von Kritikern und Publikum für sein äußerst lyrisches, sublim melodisches Spiel gelobt. Aber auch ein beliebter Sideman muss manchmal ins Rampenlicht treten. Auf dem 1961 erschienenen Album Desmond "Blue" spielte der Saxophonist zusammen mit einem Streichorchester und den hervorragenden Arrangements von Bob Prince eine Reihe exquisiter Klassiker ein, darunter das unvergessliche "My Funny Valentine". Auf fünf der sechs Alben ist der melodische Gitarrenriese Jim Hall zu hören, sein idealer musikalischer Partner. Paul Desmond war ein Meister des Bossa Nova, zu hören auf den beiden Alben "Bossa Antigua" und "Take Ten".
