João Gilberto (1931-2019) war eine wahre Legende des Bossa Nova. Es wird oft gesagt, dass António Carlos Jobim (der die meisten hier enthaltenen Songs komponierte) Mitte der 50er Jahre mit Songs wie »The Girl From Ipanema« und »Desafinado« Maßstäbe für die Entstehung des Bossa Nova setzte.
Es war jedoch Gilberto, der das Genre auf brillante Weise neu erfand (und wohl auch definierte). Auf der ganzen Welt wurde er oft als »Vater des Bossa Nova« bezeichnet, und in seiner Heimat Brasilien wurde er als »O Mito« (»Die Legende«) bezeichnet. Jobim selbst war sehr beeindruckt von Gilberto's neue Art des Gitarrenspiels. Dies war Gilbertos zweite LP und enthält so herausragende Hits wie »Samba de Uma Nota Só« (»One Note Samba«), »Outra Vez«, »Só em Teus Braços«, »Meditação« und das unvergessliche »Corcovado«.
