Nach seiner großartigen LP »Out of the Cool« aus dem Jahr 1960 veröffentlichte Gil Evans »Into the Hot«, das abwechselnd drei Stücke enthält, auf denen seine Band Kompositionen des Trompeters Johnny Carisi spielt, und drei weitere, die vom Avantgarde-Pianisten Cecil Taylor komponiert und gespielt wurden. Während auf den Evans-Stücken Musiker wie Clark Terry, Bob Brookmeyer und Phil Woods zu hören sind, präsentieren die Taylor-Stücke ein Septett, zu dem er selbst am Klavier sowie Ted Curson, Roswell Rudd, Jimmy Lyons und Archie Shepp gehören.
