While most of Ella Fitzgerald’s recordings from her Decca years showcase the singer backed by big bands, the radio shows captured live at the famous Birdland club in New York during the same period find her in a more intimate setting, accompanied by a trio featuring Hank Jones on piano.
This 2-CD set presents all of Ella’s rarely heard Birdland broadcasts for the first time on a single set. Her three 1949 Royal Roost broadcasts (also featuring the singer with Hank Jones) and a hard to find 1957 club performance with Don Abney, Wendell Marshall and Jo Jones, have been added here as a bonus.
