Der temperamentvolle Soloauftritt des Trompeters Donald Byrd und des Tenorsaxophonisten Hank Mobley in "Ghana" - dem Eröffnungsstück von Byrd In Flight - lässt die Zuhörer wissen, dass ihnen ein außergewöhnliches Musikerlebnis bevorsteht. Neben Mobley sind Jackie McLean am Altsaxophon, Duke Pearson am Klavier, die Bassisten Doug Watkins und Reggie Workman sowie der Schlagzeuger Lex Humphries bei diesen Sessions von 1960 dabei. Weitere Höhepunkte sind Byrd's atemberaubende Ballade tour-de-force auf "Little Girl Blue" und die Hard-Bop-Swingers "My Girl Shirl" und "Lex", letzterer mit einem besonders gefühlvollen Solo von Mobley.
