Der Pianist, Komponist und Bandleader erlebte 1954 den Ritterschlag durch das »Time Magazin«, das ihn als »aufregendsten Jazzkünstler unserer Tage« auf der Titelseite präsentierte.
Brubeck verschaffte dem Jazz ein neues Image und machte ihn salonfähig. Der geniale Musiker wurde zum Pop- Star des Jazz. Er war ein Meister des Stilmix und seine innovative Verbindung von Jazz und Klassik brachte eines der erfolgreichsten Alben des Genres hervor.
Das 1959 erschienene »Time Out« wurde zum ersten Millionen-Seller der Jazzgeschichte. Einer der Titel darauf, »Take Five«, wurde zum Inbegriff des Jazz und wird für immer mit dem Namen Brubeck in Verbindung gebracht werden.
