Chris Connor gehörte in den 1950er Jahren zu den berühmtesten Jazzsängerinnen. Einzigartig waren ihre Interpretationen von Balladen, bei denen sie den Rhythmus immer wieder ungewöhnlich veränderte. Billboard berichtete 1955, dass Connors erste beiden 10-Zoll-Soloalben, »Sings Lullabys of Birdland« und »Sings Lullabys for Lovers« (letztere hier vorgestellt), in der Woche bis zum 23. April 1955 auf Platz 1 und Nr. 2 der Jazz-Charts rangierten.
Das bereits erwähnte 10-Zoll-Album wird hier durch neun Balladen von George Gershwin ergänzt, die aus einer brillanten Reihe von Sessions von 1957 stammen, bei denen sie von Jazzkoryphäen wie Milt Jackson, Herbie Mann, Joe Newman, Oscar Pettiford und Mundell Lowe unterstützt wird.
