Als Reaktion auf die Kritik, dass seine ehrgeizige, stimmungsvolle Musik nicht genug swingte, kehrte Charles Mingus zu den erdigsten und ältesten Quellen des schwarzen musikalischen Ausdrucks zurück, nämlich dem Blues, dem Gospel und dem Oldtime-Jazz aus New Orleans. Die 1959 aufgenommene und 1960 veröffentlichte LP Blues and Roots gilt bis heute als Mingus' mitreißendstes Werk und ist seitdem ein Meilenstein, vielleicht das gefühlvollste in seiner Diskografie.
