Zugleich verstand sie es aber auch, so fulminant zu swingen wie ihr anderes großes Vorbild, Ella Fitzgerald. Die in der Bebop-Ära groß gewordene Sängerin machte in den 1950er Jahren - mal mit kleineren Ensembles, mal mit Studiorchestern - eine Reihe von Aufnahmen für Decca Records, die ihren Ruf als einzigartig gewitzte Interpretin festigten.
