Benny Goodman wird wohl für immer als der Vertreter des weißen Swing gelten,
der sich vom schwarzen Swing durch harmonische Elemente aus der europäischen
Musik, vor allem der Klassik, fein unterscheidet. Goodmans Dynamik und
Technik waren gespickt mit Innovationen, die von vielen nach ihm kopiert wurden,
nicht nur von Klarinettisten, sondern auch von einer Reihe von Saxofonisten.
Er unterstützte die Karriere von Musikern wie Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton oder
Charlie Christian und ging das Wagnis ein, den Jazz aus dem »Ghetto« der Clubs
zu holen und auf die prominentesten Bühnen Amerikas zu bringen.
